But underneath the funny recounting of circumstances, are excellent business lessons. As you read each of the stories and questions that follow, you will recognize a critical element for business development and sales that went missing. Having included those elements would have made the parties far more enjoyable. The following story took place in the 1970’s. An airline company required all of their in-house staff to attend their annual Christmas party. No one needed encouragement to go as they were fun-loving people and were looking forward to letting the good times roll. But then, the employees soon learned they would need to pay their own way; excitement dwindled. Lessons: 1. When hosting a party, provide one you can afford. If others offer to help, accept the help graciously. 2. Serve a mixed drink to cut down costs such as cider or eggnog versus expensive individual drinks. 3. Find a way to keep associates/employees excited and engaged about the party. Our next story advances to the 1980’s in Silicon Valley. It was another down economy and the software company was doing poorly. However, a year-end celebration was expected by the staff, and so the executives developed a “brilliant” idea. Space was reserved at a community center in one of the halls where events such as sports or card games were held. Each middle manager was instructed to have their wives (women primarily stayed home in those years fulfilling homemaker duties) cook a dish for a potluck dinner. The wives put on a good face but were downright angry that their one night out, in honor of a holiday, put them to extra work while they watched the men chow down on their home made food. Lessons: 1. What do your clients need, want and desire? 2. Are you meeting any of the anticipated expectations? 3. Are you treating your clientele fairly and with respect? In today’s society, our next story is the best one saved for last. The executive team of a well-established retail company decided their party this year should be held at a hotel. Food will be free of charge but alcohol will be on a pay as you go basis. Here is where the thinking becomes muddied. Spouses are not welcome in order to keep the cost down. Compounding the dilemma for employees, management does not want them drinking and driving. Therefore employees are being encouraged to stay over in the hotel. Let’s restate the facts: Heavy drinking, spouses nowhere to be found, and rooms randomly registered. Hmmm…. Lesson: What is the underlying message that this company is conveying to its staff â€" that of marriage or loyalty isn’t important? Monkey business takes precedent over professional business during the holidays? Reviewing these stories and lessons, one may realize it is your personal brand that speaks volumes for every action you take. The moral of the story is remain true to your values always. In this manner, you will never regret a day. Instead, you will be admired and always look forward to the Smooth Sale.

As a young professional, I rely heavily on each of them for career advice. No matter how much guidance I get from these outlets however, there are a few things that I was only able to learn through my own experience. I started my job search in August and I am thrilled to say that I was recently offered my first full-time position.  Heres what I learned during the job searching process. Find Your Next Job Opportunity With These 5 Steps 1. It takes time Recruiters are busy. Among other responsibilities, they have to sort through a pile of applications, look for potential candidates on LinkedIn, schedule interviews and meetings etc. Even when they need you to start as soon as possible, the logistics of hiring a candidate are complicated. So be patient. 2. Let go of control Its good to set a date by which you hope to get a job, but in reality, things rarely go as planned. I expected to find a job within two months of when I started in August, but instead, I received an offer after five months. When it comes to job searching, you can find a job opportunity sooner or later than you think. This isnt to say that you shouldnt plan out the process, but quit trying to control time. Instead, focus on smaller, more realistic goals like attending at least one networking event per month or sending out two applications everyday. Job rejection is rarely personal The truth is, you can never really know why you didnt get picked for a job. Maybe your long-term goals didnt meet their expectations or you didnt quite match the companys culture. Or perhaps the recruiter felt a greater connection with another candidate because they had more things in common. Theres a myriad of reasons and sadly, not all of them are under your control. I used to take rejections personally, especially for jobs to which I dedicated a lot of time and effort, until I realized that the hiring process is highly subjective. You dont become any less valuable after a rejection. Dont feel discouraged when that happens. Keep doing your best and trust that the right job opportunity will come in due time. 4. Your social media matters The line between your personal and professional life is pretty much nonexistent online. Recruiters are everywhere and they are watching. I heard many stories of people getting hired through social media and they have changed the way I use my accounts. You can leverage them for your career. With that said, I still share some personal information on Twitter. I just spend more time curating stuff. Make sure the content of your social media is aligned with your long-term goals. 5. Networking is key Gone are the days when we had to apply to a job in-person. Finding your next job opportunity is now just a few clicks away. Most people choose this option because its much more convenient, but it makes it easier for their resume to vanish into a black hole. Most jobs these days arent advertised. To tap into the hidden job market and maximize their job search, one must actively network. Among other resources, I use LinkedIn to connect with recruiters and other industry insiders. I also regularly attend events, not to ask people if theyre hiring (which you shouldnt do), but to find out more about my industries of interest and meet new people. Authorities like Seth Godin object to going after numbers, while people such as Guy Kawasaki think that its all about numbers (especially on Twitter).   Im split in the middle right now, but I want to take time today to explain why numbers are so important, despite the controversy.   In fact, I strongly believe that a lot of influencers are telling you not to go for numbers because, in fact, they are going for numbers themselves.     In this way, they have more leverage than you do. ?? To me, the lust for numbers dates back to high school. I wouldnt consider myself popular in high school, yet I had a strong base of friends in middle school.   During my last year of middle school, my city created a brand new school and divided our class, leaving my friendships split between both schools, which in effect damaged them.   Then, in high school, I was lost and didnt have much self-esteem.   Everyone was trying to get into the popular group, and I didnt think I fit in.   It was all about having a lot of friends, so you had enough social proof to go to select parties, etc.   If you werent popular, you werent included.   If youre reading this, you probably fell into one of these categories. Our society is obsessed with numbers. Numbers are standard metrics for measurements of popularity.   One example was when Aston Kutcher raced CNN to a million followers on Twitter.   Another one was when CNN brough Gary Vaynerchuk in to be on TV, and they promoted him as having a few hundred thousand followers on Twitter.   A lot of people are talking about how Vin Diesel has millions of Facebook fans.   Are you seeing the trend here? Numbers matter in these situations Corporate recruitment: If you have the same experience as someone else, but they have 5,000 more contacts and 3 additional recommendations on LinkedIn, they will get the interview over you.   The more connected you are, the more productive you are in the workplace and the easier it is for you to market on behalf of your company and recruit other people. Advertising: If you want to make money, then numbers are critical to your sponsorship packages and to your potential advertisers.   You will always get asked how far your reach is and if you only have 300 subscribers, you might get fifty cents a month.   By having more subscribers, you can charge more. Book deals: I guarantee that if you have 100,000 followers on Twitter instead of 100 followers, your book advance will be $50,000 more.   Publishers are crazy about authors having marketing platforms because all they do is publish it, not sell it. Social proof: If you go to a blog that only has twenty subscribers, you probably wont subscribe because there is no proof that the content is good, aside from the content itself.   We are an A.D.D. society, so we need quick evidence before we take time to read something in full.   The larger your audience, the easier it is to build on that community. Promise of value: If you want to interview successful people or celebrities, you wont be able to unless you can show a promise of value.   They dont have much time, but will help you if you can prove that your content reaches a large group of people.   Networking is the key to personal branding, so if you dont work to boost your numbers, you wont be able to network will the big timers. Numbers add up on FriendFeed In my opinion, FriendFeed (a social aggregation and sharing service)   just changed the numbers game forever. I believe that the Feedburner.com number for blog owners is the key to everything.   Its more important than your Twitter following, your LinkedIn contacts and your Facebook friends.   The reason is simply because it measures the stickyness of your brand and the reader loyalty.   If you have thousands of readers, then more people will subscribe and you will be able to get more perks as a blogger and money from advertisers. FriendFeed just announced that the number of friends you have count towards this Feedburner.com number. This is a major deal!   Basically, what this does is build your perception/brand as a blogger, as long as you invest time in developing your FriendFeed follower base.   For instance, Louis Gray, who had almost 10,000 followers on FriendFeed, now has over 14,000 blog subscribers.   In effect, this helps build Louiss brand and anyone else who invested their time in FriendFeed.   If you arent on FriendFeed, then claim FriendFeed.com/yourname right now and start participating. On another note, if Louis or someone else on FriendFeed were to add your blog feed URL to their account, your numbers would increase as well.   For corporate accounts, such as FriendFeed.com/EMCCorp, all corporate bloggers will gain this benefit (Disclaimer: I work at EMC). The downfall of a number-driven world The problem with the numbers game is that having a large number doesnt mean that people are engaged. Since both Twitter and FriendFeed call for information dumping, your tweets and messages on FriendFeed arent always read (hat tip to @stu).   When it comes to blogs, there is a good chance one of your readers will read your entire post, when they might not have even seen it on FriendFeed. Therefore, FriendFeed subscribers arent as valuable as blog or email subscribers, yet they carry the same number weight.
